CatchUp - Mary Helen McCollister

This month’s CatchUp is with MomUp's superstar mom, Mary Helen McCollister.

I’m Mary Helen - Former accountant turned development professional. I'm excited about my new role as Development Director for Needham Community Farm.

One of my take aways from engaging with MomUp is working towards finding my career sweet spot; the place where your strengths and talents intersect with your interests and passions. It is a work in progress. But this recent job opportunity presented to me by MomUp is hopefully getting me one step closer.

What career highlight are you most proud of?

Passing the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. It is truly the best example of perseverance early on in my career journey.

What energizes you about your career?

People energize me. I love people and building connections. This energy and need to fulfill it has lead me to where I am today in my career.

What was the first job you ever had?

I was an athlete in high school and worked in a sporting goods store. I learned so many valuable lessons from my first manager about the importance of being on time, presentable, confident, and customer satisfaction.

What keeps you going during this pandemic?

Consistent exercise has been my sanity during the pandemic. Initially, I started running every day and then moved to cycling and now I am doing a little of both. I wake up early and get it done. Exercise gets my head right for the day.

Do you have any work/life balance tips?

I wish. It is hard. I believe strongly in working for an organization or company that supports your priorities. I want to prioritize my family and then work to live. Of course time management, organization, carpools, leaning on your village, all help with the ability to balance.

Who would you like to invite over for dinner?

My brother, David. He lives in Nashville with his family. Because of the pandemic, this is the longest we have been a part. I would love to sit around the table with him and his family and just enjoy being together. Next to health, family is everything!
